Lowdown :

The central concept of Chinese medicine and health practices, "Qi" defies simple explanation. It’s often described as life force or energy flow, but the best way to truly understand "Qi" is by learning about the health and wellness traditions it is based upon. Practicing Taoist Qigong and Tai-Chi, applying yin and yang theory to acupuncture and massage and calming your mind through Buddhist meditation are all centuries-old ways that Chinese people balance their Qi. Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) works to heal and prevent illness through holistic practice, incorporating whatever elements work best for each individual.

This seven-day trip provides a unique opportunity to learn both theoretical and practical applications of TCM, with China’s capital city as the backdrop. Your days will begin with sessions with a Tai-Chi master, and you will visit leading TCM scholars and practitioners. You will also tour Beijing’s must-see sites, from the Forbidden Palace to the Bird’s Nest to the winding alleyways of the Hutong. We will steer clear of the capital’s ample artery-clogging offerings, opting instead for healthful, traditional Chinese meals. Vegetarian diets can easily be accommodated

What :

Day 1
Red Capital Residence

Your guide will meet you at the Beijing International Airport and escort you to your hotel to rest and freshen up. In the evening, you'll meet with our Tai-Chi master and share Beijing’s iconic dish—Beijing roast duck. Learn to wrap the crispy skin, succulent meat and vegetable slices into the thin crepe-like wrap, and sample the sauces—from sweet to savory to slightly spicy—that the Beijingers have enjoyed their duck with since the imperial era.

Day 2
Red Capital Residence

After breakfast at the hotel, meet your Tai-Chi master for a morning session. Visit Tian’anmen Square and Forbidden City, home to 24 emperors from its creation by Emperor Yongle in 1420 until the last Qing emperor, Puyi, departed it in 1924. The magnificent complex covers 170 acres behind 30-foot-high walls, and its rooms display treasures of Beijing’s imperial history, from elaborate robes to ancient scrolls and paintings. After lunch at a local restaurant, we will visit the China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences (CACMS) for an introduction to TCM theories and practice. At the end of the day, you’ll experience a favorite TCM treatment, the foot massage, before enjoying a hot pot dinner.

Day 3
Red Capital Residence

Continue your Tai-Chi lessons after breakfast and then return to CACMS for a class on the theory and technique of acupuncture and moxibustion. After lunch, your acupuncture education continues with practical lessons, a chance to observe a master at work, and a visit to a TCM health and wellness clinic. The day closes with a dinner lecture on the yin and yang, the forces whose balance are central to TCM practice.

Day 4
Red Capital Residence

Start the day with breakfast and learn more Tai-Chi sequences from the master. This morning’s TCM class at CACMS will introduce you to the theories behind pulse diagnosis, the first component of any visit to a TCM practitioner. After lunch, we will learn about the history of China’s medical traditions at the Traditional Chinese Medicine Museum. Then we will head to the winding alleys of the hutong, Beijing’s unique traditional residences, where we will visit a family in their courtyard home and learn about local people’s everyday wellness practices. Dinner will include an overview of tea culture.

Day 5
Red Capital Residence

After breakfast, review all you have learned on the previous four days of Tai-Chi learning. We will then drive to Badachu Temple to learn about meditation and the dietary principles of Buddhism, before sharing a vegetarian meal. Our next stop is the Summer Palace, built as a resort for China’s Manchu rulers in the 18th century. Take a short cruise on Kunming Lake, noting the islands and bridges of the imperial getaway. Next, it’s on to more modern marvels—the Bird’s Nest and Water Cube, the premier venues of Beijing’s hosting of the 2008 Olympic Games. Tonight’s dinner will feature foods cooked with herbs used in traditional Chinese medicine.

Day 6
Red Capital Residence

Enjoy an early breakfast, and then set out for the Mutianyu section of the Great Wall. We will practice Tai-Chi on the ancient stones of this 2,000-year-old structure. We will eat lunch at the School House Canteen, whose menu includes Western, Chinese and fusion dishes, with many of the ingredients grown in the adjoining garden. In the afternoon, it’s on to the 798 Contemporary Art District, a factory complex converted into art galleries, shops and restaurants. Get a close-up look at the products of China’s recent art boom, as some of the country’s most respected contemporary artists exhibit their work here. In the evening, we say goodbye in style, sharing an imperial farewell dinner.

Day 7

After breakfast at the hotel, transfer to Beijing International Airport for your flight back home.

How to get there :

Beijing Capital International Airport is the main international airport serving Beijing, China. It is located 32 km (20 mi) northeast of Beijing's city center in an enclave of Chaoyang District and the surroundings of that enclave in suburban Shunyi District.

Beijing Capital International Airport is the main hub for Air China, the flag carrier of the People's Republic of China, which flies to around 120 destinations (excluding cargo) from Beijing. Hainan and China Southern Airlines also use the airport as their hub.

There are plenty of direct nonstop flights from major cities in Asia to Beijing.

Red Capital Residence, located in a courtyard home in Beijing’s Dongsi preserved heritage district, was witness to a history of intrigue during the Qing Dynasty and Republican era. One year of dedicated restoration by Beijing’s finest traditional craftsmen was required to preserve antiquity and revive the spirit of this historic home.
